Newcastle West led this very entertaining Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield game in Cullinagh 10:9 entering injury time when St Marys seemed to snatch victory! A converted try to put them 10:16 ahead but Newcastle West fought back and, after sustained pressure from Declan Moloney, Philip Wrenn, John Sheehan and Karl Hayes, the ball reached Alan Roche who drove over the line to score a try. Tommy Kelleher took the conversion which hit the upright and went over to leave the final score 17:16.
Newcastle West had the advantage of the strong wind in the first half but could not break down the St Mary’s defence. On 35 minutes, Newcastle West were awarded a scrum inside the St Mary’s 22. John Sheehan broke from the base before passing to Niall Enright, who gave a reverse pass to Rory Keating to touch down in the corner. Alan Roche added the conversion.
From the kick off, Newcastle West conceded a soft penalty which was converted to leave the half time score 7:3
St Mary’s had the wind in the second half and they reduced the deficit with a penalty on 13 minutes. Alan Roche restored our lead with a well-taken penalty after 20 minutes, but St Mary’s added another penalty with five minutes remaining.
In injury time the game came to life and Newcastle West ran out deserving winners.
Man of the match was Alan Roche, while Niall Enright, Karl Hayes, John Sheehan and Ray Kearney also played well.
